The penal colony on the Solovki Islands, in the middle of the White Sea, was the testing ground for the Gulag system. Intellectuals, artists, members of the former aristocracy and deportees paradoxically made this place of slavery and death a place of culture too.
This film, a journey through the Russian landscape, history and literature, is an investigation by the writer Olivier Rolin into the fate of the camp’s library, which contained up to 30,000 volumes.
