While Claude Ponti’s work is well-known, the man himself is discreet and had never allowed a film to be made about him. His faith in the filmmakers, Thierry Kubler and Stéphanie Molez, allowed this documentary to come about. Claude Ponti, un art de l’enfance offers a portrait of this author-draftsman who turned the world of children’s books upside down, in which his life and his work shed light on each other. In the film, Claude Ponti becomes a “spectator” of his own works. The editing establishes a dialogue between his voice and his images. And the graphic work that underlies the film allows us to share the unbridled inventiveness with which he manipulates language and shapes his images. The film shows the great humanity that is present in all his work, occasionally hidden behind a scathing sense of humour.
