The action unfolds in a small shopping street in Vienna in 1930. The play uses the tragi-comic incidents in the lives of a handful of shopkeepers to show how the decline of a society’s values became the breeding ground for Nazism. Their stupidity, their disastrous love affairs, their banal indifference: it was the accumulation of tiny betrayals that transformed these formerly “honest folk” into “imbeciles” and “bastards”.
