Poil de carotte” is more than a classic. It is a myth, a legend, the most universal embodiment of the abused child. It also looks at the family and its dysfunctions. Jacques Renard’s film takes this dimension into consideration. Set in a small country town in the 1950s (rather than at the turn of the century) and with a young Lepic family and Poil de carotte, Jacques Renard describes the lovelessness of a family and the perversity of the relationships that result from this.
