Max Roach is undoubtedly one of the most talented drummers in the history of jazz. Beginning in Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington’s big bands and playing beside Charlie Parker during the rise of Bip Bop, he started his own band in the 1950s. The strength and lyricism of his style are most
apparent in his solo performances. A defendant of the cause of civil rights in the United States, he never stopped bringing together classical jazz and rap and exploring innovative, contemporary art forms.
