The film tells both the life of Ray Barretto and the musical history of “latinos”. It indicates the differences and parallels between the rhythms of jazz and music from Cuba and Puerto Rico.At a time when we are commemorating the abolition of slavery, the film is also a homage to the magical power of memory and fraternity
that allowed this white jazzman to be a symbol for black Americans of their reunion with drums – a rediscovery that they have their cousins in the Caribbean to thank for.
